ChatGPT, What It Is and Why It Matters

Ready for another disruptive technology? Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way we gather facts and use information. Among the latest offerings threatening to upend current practices is OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is capable of generating human-like responses to prompts.

So what exactly IS ChatGPT and why is everyone so excited about it? Let’s break it down.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI developed by OpenAI. GPT stands for Generative Pretrained Transformer, which basically means that the technology can create and revise the content it creates based on user parameters. Today’s ChatGPT is the product of significant work and three prior iterations since 2018. The current iteration was developed using a massive data set and boasts human-like responsiveness, as well as the ability to learn from user guidance.

OpenAI’s stated aim is to create a “friendly AI” that benefits humanity.

How Does ChatGPT Work?

ChatGPT basically gathers data, organizes it according to user parameters, and “learns” from guidance based on its responses. You can think of it as three processes:

  1. Collecting Demonstration Data and Train a Supervised Policy.
A prompt is sampled from our dataset, a labeler shows the desired output behavior, and these data are used to train the GTP-3.5 with supervised learning.
  2. Collecting Comparison Data and Create a Reward Model.
A prompt and several outputs are sampled, a labeler ranks responses from best to worst, and these data are used to train the reward model.
  3. Optimize a Policy against the Reward Model Using the PPO Reinforcement Learning.
A new prompt is sampled from the dataset, the PPO is initialized from the supervised policy, the policy generates an output, the model creates a reward for that output, and the reward is used to update the policy using PPO.

The AI’s deep learning capability allows it to interact using human-like responses in user chats. While it doesn’t intuit, the AI does quickly adapt by incorporating new input. Essentially, it develops a picture of what you like (and don’t) based on the parameters and feedback you provide.

Applications

For business brands, ChatGPT is a gateway to customer interaction.

  • Learn about your customers. When a user interacts with your ChatGPT, they’re interacting with your brand, and they’re offering you an important opportunity to understand their needs and preferences.
  • Respond to concerns promptly. ChatAI can respond to customer questions and concerns, providing answers to FAQs.
  • Build Your Brand. Craft your Chat AI to the tone you’d like to convey to your customers, and give it the data to provide consistent and reliable answers.
  • Design Branded Materials. An AI can help you create compelling brand designs that reflect your culture and message.
  • Boost Marketing Efforts. The more you know about your customers, the better you can meet their needs. What you learn through ChatAI can help you craft more targeted marketing efforts in the future.

Other potential applications for ChatGPT include…

  • Composing Your Resume. You input your experience, employment history, academic degrees, etc., and the AI generates a resume that appears as if someone were typing in real time. You can adjust the formatting, edit the language, and make any changes you want in creating a final version.
  • Writing Your Cover Letter. Now you have a dynamic resume, why not back it up with a cover letter designed to engage with your prospects.
  • Event Planning. Need to pull together a conference in a hurry? An AI can create a schedule, itinerary, and contact list to help scaffold your ideas and make the process easier.
  • Debugging Code. Want to unload some of your most tedious tasks? An AI can help you debug code without the need for a line-by-line review.
Why Chat GPT Matters

OpenAI’s invention has made a big splash—so much so that Microsoft has adopted parts of the technology and Google is working on its own version. With big players involved, you can be sure the effects will be far reaching. Imagine searching for a perfect toll house cookie recipe online, and rather than scanning a hundred search results, simply being served a recipe that meets your pre-expressed preferences? That may be just one way this new technology changes the way we collect and use information.
